5.4 Coolant Level Check

Warning: Do not remove the radiator cap from a hot engine. Wait until the temperature drops below 50 degrees Celsius [122 degrees Fahrenheit] before removing the pressure cap. Failure to do so may result in personal injury from hot coolant spraying or steam. Loosen the cap slowly to release pressure from the cooling system.

Caution: Do not use sealant additives to stop leaks in the cooling system. This can lead to blockages and insufficient coolant circulation, resulting in engine overheating. The coolant level must be checked daily.

Note: Do not add cold coolant to a hot engine. This can damage engine components. Before adding coolant, allow the engine to cool to below 50 degrees Celsius [122 degrees Fahrenheit].

Caution: When adding coolant to the cooling system, it must be pre-mixed with 50% water and 50% antifreeze, then added to the system. Adding antifreeze to the engine before the liquids are fully mixed can cause engine overheating, as antifreeze has less heat absorption capacity than water.

Pour coolant into the cooling system until it reaches the neck of the radiator fill opening or the bottom of the expansion tank fill neck.

Note: Some radiators have two fill necks. Both fill necks must be filled with coolant after the cooling system has been purged.
