Operating The Diesel Engine

3.6 Engine Operation
1. Do not operate the engine at full throttle for an extended period (more than one minute) below the maximum torque engine speed (rpm).
2. After operating at full load, allow the engine to idle for 3 to 5 minutes before shutting it down.

Note: Continuous operation under conditions of excessively low coolant temperature (below 60 degrees Celsius [140 degrees Fahrenheit]) or excessively high coolant temperature (above 100 degrees Celsius [212 degrees Fahrenheit]) can damage the engine.

3. If overheating occurs, reduce engine speed or shift to a lower gear, or take both actions simultaneously, until the temperature returns to the normal operating range. If the engine temperature cannot return to normal, refer to the troubleshooting section (Chapter Eleven) or contact an authorized Dongfeng Cummins service station.

4. Most faults have early warnings. Visual and auditory inspections of performance, sounds, or changes in engine appearance indicate the need for service or engine repair. Some changes that need to be inspected include:
① Engine stalling
② Vibration
③ Abnormal engine noise
④ Fuel, oil, or coolant leaks
⑤ Sudden changes in engine operating temperature or pressure.
⑥ Excessive smoke
⑦ Power loss
⑧ Increased fuel consumption
⑨ Increased oil consumption
